Printed Ephemera — 1860-1880
To my true love
Multi-layered, handfinished valentine's card. The under layer is of cream paper solid embossed with a border design surrounding an oval panel. Applied to the panel is a cut out paper motif of an open book, the pages marked 'Love' & 'True', a sign post marked 'To my Lover' and a cherub walking towards it. This decoration is surrounded by a yellow and silver embossed lace paper border with an outer cotton net fringe attached to the sheet below by folded paper hinges or springs to give a 3d effect. Applied to the top and bottom of the border are white cotton leaves and two coloured cut out paper decorations, a bird holding an envelope printed 'To my True Love' and a figure of cupid with a walking stick.
