Printed Ephemera — 1860-1880
Love in absence
Multi-layered, handfinished valentine's card with an undersheet of white lace paper heavily embossed with two cherub figures and a vase of flowers framing a central roundel embossed with a silver and white image of cupid and a classical female. Applied above this image is a cut out paper illustration of a young girl playing with a doll, this flaps down to reveal the embossed image below and both motifs are surrounded by a wreath of white cotton leaves bound by a small paper scrap printed 'Love in absence'. Surrounding the wreath is a white lace paper, oval shaped border attached to the under layer by folded paper springs or hinges to give a 3d effect. Applied to this border is a garland of embossed paper flowers and white cotton leaves.
