Printed Ephemera — 1818
An Explanation of the View of Rome taken from the Capitol
Guidebook and plan produced to accompany the panoramic view of Rome exhibiting at H.A. Barker and J.Burford's Panorama, near the new church in the Strand, in 1818. This twenty four page guidebook takes the reader through the panorama as though they were on a walking tour, stopping at each point marked on the panorama to discuss its history and current state.
The Strand Panorama was opened in July 1803 by the business partnership of Ramsay Richard Reinagle and Thomas Edward Barker, eldest son of panoramic pioneer Robert Barker who owned the hugely successful Panorama on Leicester Square. This venture therefore put father and son in direct competition. The Strand’s success under its original owners was limited, however, and in 1816 it was bought out by Henry-Aston Barker and Robert Burford, the then owners of the Leicester Square panorama.
