Printed Ephemera — 1859
Canton
Description and illustrated plan of the panoramic view of the Chinese city of Canton as exhibited at the Panorama, Leicester Square in 1859.It comprises a 16-page description and a folded illustrative plan with a numbered key. The exhibit that it promotes was a huge 360° painting displayed in a purpose-built rotunda. This was a timely exhibition as in 1858 and 1859 French and British forces captured Canton during what was known as the Second Opium War or the Second Anglo-Chinese War. This was part of an endeavour by Western powers to force the Chinese to allow trade with foreigners in several key Chinese ports.
