Printed Ephemera — 1859
Card, valentine card
Handfinished valentine's card comprising a white lace paper top sheet, part silvered and embossed with a design incorporating cherubs, flowers and scrolls surrounding an open central area. Applied to the top and bottom of the open area is a small semi-circular shaped piece of paper printed with floral garlands. Inside the card is applied a small coloured, embossed paper bird with an envelope in its beak surrounded by a wreath of white and gilded embossed paper leaves. When the card is closed this applied decoration shows through the open panel of the top sheet. Handwritten within the card is the manufacturer's note '1859 3/6'
