Printed Ephemera — 1887-10-01
In Memoriam
This mourning card is inscribed "In Memoriam" on front cover with inside verses and the words "In Affectionate Remembrance of Ann Wilson, who died Oct 1st 1887, aged 84 years'. The body of Ann Wilson was interred at the Hull Borough burial ground in Hedon Road on 5 October 1887.
The first verse amends a famous poem by William Cowper which starts
'Like crowded forest-trees we stand/ And some are mark'd to fall; /The axe will smite at God's command,/And soon shall smite us all'. On the card the lines have become 'Like gayest forest trees we stand,/And soon are marked to fall,/The axe will strike at God's command,/And soon will strike us all'.
