Suit, women's suit
This suit was worn in the House of Commons by Nancy, Lady Astor during her last term as Member of Parliament. It is very well made and is possibly a couture outfit. Nancy Astor was the first female MP to sit in the House of Commons. Elected in 1919 as a Conservative candidate for Plymouth she campaigned on a range of social issues. As well as introducing a bill that raised the legal age for the purchase of alcohol to eighteen she campaigned for female suffrage, equal rights in the Civil Service and nursery school provision.
