Printed Ephemera — 1838-1840
Tallis's London street views : No. 53. Tottenham Court Road, division 3
Issue number 53 of Tallis's London street views, showing nos. 1-46 and 227-267 Tottenham Court Road. Beside no. 267 is Meux's Brewery. Meux's Brewery was infamous for an accident that occurred on Monday 17 October 1814. The metal hoop on a huge vat containing 3,555 barrels of ‘entire’ (beer that was 10 months brewed) broke and the vat split open, the force causing several hogsheads of porter to break, and also knocked out a large vat in the cellar. The pressure caused a brewery wall to fall down and sent a cascade of beer into the street, in turn knocking down other walls and two entire houses in New Street. Eight people died as a result of the accident.
