Social History — C. 1965
Computer console
A LEO III English Electric computer console, installed in 1966, in the City offices of Wedd, Durlacher, Morduant & Co., London’s largest firm of stock jobbers. The LEO (Lyons Electronic Office) was a British computer, originally developed by the food firm J. Lyons. This example was the 45th Leo III to be installed in Britain, and the first in the City.
A mere eight years later, in 1972, the Leo III was retired in favour of more powerful machines. Wedd , Durlacher had just experienced a huge increase in turnover from £8 to £14 million and a 100% rise in their taxed profits. Growth continued and in 1984 the firm merged with Barclays Bank to create Britain’s first integrated international securities trading mega-firm.
