Tallis's London street views : No. 66. Coventry Street and Cranbourn Street

Issue number 66 of Tallis's 'London street views' showing 1-32 Coventry Street and 1-29 Cranbourn Street. Next to 29 Cranbourn Street is Burford's Panorama. Robert Barker is attributed with developing the idea of painting a picture to be viewed as panorama in a circular building. In 1792-3 he employed Robert Mitchell to erect a purpose-built structure, 90 feet in diameter and 57 feet high, in Leicester Square to exhibit his own panoramas. A rival panorama was erected in the Strand by Barker's son, Thomas Edward, which was bought by another son, Henry Aston, in 1816. Following the death of Robert Barker in 1806, Henry Aston Barker and his assistant, John Burford, ran both establishments. Barker retired in 1826, leaving the business to be run by John and Robert Burford. The business continued until 1864.
