Printed Ephemera — 1860-1880
Card, valentine card
Multi-layered handfinished valentine's card formed from sheets of embossed and lace paper attached one on top of the other by paper springs or hinges to give a 3 dimensional effect. The layers are part painted silver and heavily embossed with a design representing the interior of a cathedral with statues, pillars and archways. The bottom layer which has an uncoloured lace paper and embossed border has an applied central panel of cream watered silk. The card is also decorated with applied cut out paper figures of cupid holding aloft a gilded wedding ring and a vicar holding a book. The decoration also includes applied green paper flowers with red tinsel centres.
