Printed Ephemera — 1850-1851
Card, valentine card
Multi-layered, handfinished valentine's card comprising layers of embossed and lace paper. Applied to the central area is a piece of paper handpainted with an idyllic lakeside scene incorporating a waterfall, rocks, a moon and a paper figure of a classical man. The above layers comprise sections of white and silver lace paper grouped together to form a garden design incorporating trees, foliage, a gazebo, staircase, cherub and classical figures. Some of these sections are applied to the under layers by paper springs or hinges to give the card a 3d effect. The central area of the top layers is filled with a panel of cotton gauze. The card is also decorated with an applied garland of embossed, paper and cotton leaves and flowers.
