Printed Ephemera — 1841-1879
Card, valentine card
Oval shaped handfinished valentine's card with embossed floral border, part painted silver, surrounding a plain central panel. Applied to the panel is a cut out embossed paper figure of a young man holding a flower bouquet above an applied garland of dried grasses and foliage and embossed paper leaves.
Victorian Valentine's cards like this could be made from commercially-produced papers. Paper lace was a popular card base and printed scraps would be added to adorn and personalise the cards.
