Printed Ephemera — 1860-1880
Card, valentine card
Handfinished valentine's card formed from two layers of lace paper attached by paper springs. The under layer comprises a white lace paper border embossed with dove, vine and grape design surrounding a central rice paper panel. The panel has a handpainted view incorporating a bridge, lake and fountain. Framing the panel is an applied wreath of embossed paper flowers and leaves. The top layer comprises a lace paper border embossed with silver and white flowers and leaves. The central area of this layer is open revealing the applied and handpainted decoration below. Inside the card are handwritten manufacturer's notes in pencil 'Antony Youngs view Ross's flowers'. This refers to the names of the workers who applied the handfinished decoration.
