Printed Ephemera — 1835
Timetable
This printed timetable lists departure times, fares and destinations of foreign steam packet services run by the General Steam Navigation Company during May 1835. On the reverse of the timetable are printed full details of the ships sailing from Custom House or the Tower to destinations including Hamburg, Calais, Ostend, Antwerp and Rotterdam. Also included are details of how passengers may acquire a passport for travel.
The General Steam Navigation Company was founded in 1824 and was London's main short-distance shipping line until the 1970s. It specialised in voyages to ports in Britain and north west Europe such as Hamburg and Antwerp. It was also known for its pleasure cruises between London and resorts lower down the Thames like Ramsgate and Margate. The pleasure steamers departed from London Bridge Wharf.
