Printed Ephemera — C. 1876
The Rink Galop
Sheet music for the popular song 'The Rink Galop' as performed at the Royal Aquarium in Westminster by Charles D'Albert. The colour lithograph cover depicts roller skaters on the roller skating rink located at the Aquarium.
The Royal Aquarium located in Westminster opened in 1876. As well as 13 aquarium tanks the venue included a live music performance space, reading and smoking rooms, an art gallery and roller skating rink as referred to in this popular song. Unfortunately the Aquarium tanks soon developed operational problems and the venue quickly developed a reputation as a place where unaccompanied women came in search of male companionship.
