Prehistoric — Early Mesolithic; 10,000 - 7,000 BCE
Point, barbed point
An Early Mesolithic antler barbed point dating 10,000 to 7,000 BCE. This is the lower part of an antler point, with barbs on one side. The shaft narrows for the attachment of a haft.
It was probably mounted in a wooden haft (handle), perhaps with several other harpoons, and used to spear large fish or birds. The Mesolithic diet tended to be focussed around marine resources - fish, crustaceans and wetland birds.
