Printed Ephemera — 1836-1855
Card, valentine card
Handfinished cobweb, beehive or flowercage Valentine's card comprising a top sheet by David Mossman with an uncoloured lace paper border embossed with a flower design surrounding a central panel decorated with handpainted leaves and applied pink paper flowers. The cobweb or beehive is applied above this floral decoration and comprises circular shaped threads of paper with an applied cotton butterfly above. A cotton thread attached to the body of the butterfly enables the paper to be lifted to produce a beehive effect when raised. Usually when lifted a motif or token would be revealed beneath the hive. In this card this motif is now missing.
