The butcher - Newport Market Alley
Newport meat market near Leicester Square was one of the major meat markets of eighteenth-century London but by the mid nineteenth century the area was a slum. In 1872 the Newport Market Company attempted to revitalise the market but the venture failed and in 1877 the Metropolitan Board of Works was granted permission to redevelop the area and build Shaftesbury Avenue and Charing Cross Road.
