Tower of London
An illustration of the Tower of London from the Introduction to 'London: a pilgrimage' by Blanchard Jerrold and Gustave Doré, 1872. The White Tower in the centre of the illustration is one of the oldest buildings in London, construction having started in the late 1070s on the orders of William the Conqueror. The Tower was a fortress and symbol of power, but also served as a royal residence.
