The docks - night scene
An illustration of the docks by night from 'London: a Pilgrimage' by Blanchard Jerrold and Gustave Doré,1872. Jerrold writes of 'Streets of poverty-marked tenements, gaudy public-houses and beer-shops' where an 'after-dark journey by the river side is an expedition to be undertaken cautiously, and in safe company'. This illustration is of a 'pitched battle we witnessed outside a public-house at Dockhead one threatening night'.
