The animated sandwich
An illustration of a sandwich board man advertising a performance by the Swedish soprano, Christine Nilsson, at Drury Lane, taken from 'London: a Pilgrimage' by Blanchard Jerrold and Gustave Doré, 1872. 'The Times' of 16 May 1870 records that "Christine Nilsson came forward on Tuesday as the heroine of Lucia di Lammermoor, and was welcomed with a heartiness too real to be mistaken. Few artists have so speedily attained the very highest professional rank as this gifted and accomplished lady". The opera, by Donizetti, was based on Sir Walter Scott's novel 'The Bride of Lammermoor'.
