Whittington at Highgate
'Whittington at Highgate', the frontispiece from 'London: a Pilgrimage' by Blanchard Jerrold and Gustave Doré, 1872. . A young Dick Whittington sits on a stone with a view of Highgate beyond. Richard Whittington (c. 1350-1423) was the third son of Sir William Whittington of Gloucestershire. He was apprenticed to a London mercer and worked his way up the civic hierarchy to be elected Mayor on three occasions.
