Waifs and strays
An illustration of people waiting for admittance into a night refuge, from the book 'London: a Pilgrimage' by Blanchard Jerrold and Gustave Doré, 1872. Jerrold notes that queue consists of the 'hopeless waifs and strays of London life' together with people who have come in from the country, hoping to find work in the metropolis.
