Coffee stall - early morning
An illustration of a coffee stall in the early morning, from 'London: a Pilgrimage' by Blanchard Jerrold and Gustave Doré, 1872. Coffee stalls varied from simple barrows to elaborate stalls with awnings and brass-mounted oil lamps. Likewise the food and drink offered could vary from only coffee to tea, hot chocolate, bread and butter, sandwiches and cake. On some stalls the coffee was adulterated with chicory and other additives.
