Wesminster Abbey - Confirmation of Westminster boys
An illustration of a confirmation service in Westminster Abbey, from 'London: a Pilgrimage' by Blanchard Jerrold and Gustave Doré, 1872. Jerrold describes the scene: 'Now crowds of happy boys, the favourites of fortune of the land, are coming from Westminster School for confirmation by the bishop. It is an imposing and a beautiful scene.... The bishop lays his hands upon their sunny, comely heads. It is a day and time of high hopes that stir the imagination vividly'.
Westminster School has its origins in a small charity school set up in 1179 by the Benedictine monks of Westminster Abbey.
