Over London - by rail
An illustration from 'London: a Pilgrimage' by Blanchard Jerrold and Gustave Doré, 1872. In Chapter XIV Jerrold describes travelling to work in London on a train: "The journey between Vauxhall, or Charing Cross, and Cannon Street, presents to the contemplative man scenes of London life of the most striking description. He is admitted behind the scenes of the poorest neighbourhoods; surveys interminable terraces of back gardens alive with women and children; [and] has a bird's eye view of potteries and work-yards of many kinds".
