The workmen's train
An illustration of men taking the train to work, from 'London: a Pilgrimage' by Blanchard Jerrold and Gustave Doré, 1872. In May 1864 the Metropolitan Railway became the first to introduce workmen's fares. These fares were cheaper than the normal rate but journeys had to be taken early in the morning.
