Lavender Girl
Illustration showing sellers of lavender, from 'London: a Pilgrimage' by Blanchard Jerrold and Gustave Doré, 1872. According to Henry Mayhew in 'London Labour and the London Poor' (1861) lavender, when in season, was sold by flower girls. Long-stemmed lavender was particularly in demand by ladies who would tie sprigs together with ribbon and place them in drawers and bookcases to scent the home.
