Stocking
Black silk stockings hand embroidered with the 'Votes for Women' slogan and miniature flags in the purple, white and green colours of the militant Women's Social and Political Union. The stockings were worn by Lillian Burslem and it is likely she embroiderd them herself, using her traditional feminine skills to identify her allegiance with the militant Votes for Women cause. The purple, white and green tri-colour was introduced by the WSPU in 1908. Members were encouraged members to wear fashion accessories in the colours wherever possible.
