Home from Holland House

Holland House was a Jacobean mansion which, under the ownership of the 3rd Baron Holland and his wife, became a salon where political and literary figures gathered. It retained its social position into the nineteenth century under the 4th Baron but after his death his wife continued to entertain to such a level that, soon after 'London: a Pilgrimage' was published, parts of the estate had to be sold to meet mounting debts.
