Caught in the branches
An illustration from the book 'London: a Pilgrimage' by Blanchard Jerrold and Gustave Doré,1872, showing a cartful of people returning from the Derby having to duck to avoid overhanging branches. Jerrold describes the wide variety of people attending the Derby, including 'the Vulgar packed close as pigs in a butcher's cart' who 'catching a branch here or encountering a "spill" there, pass under the observer's eyes in a never-ending tide'.
