The Derby - returning home
An illustration of race-goers returning from Epsom to London, from the book 'London: a Pilgrimage' by Blanchard Jerrold and Gustave Doré, 1872. Jerrold describes how, on the way home from the Derby, he finds 'the revellers divided into two distinct, easily-recognised sections - viz., the Winners and the Losers. The Winners are uproarious and bibulous; the Losers are bibulous and sullen'.
