Trial of strength
An Illustration of a man using a fairground 'Trial of Strength' machine, from the book 'London: a Pilgrimage' by Blanchard Jerrold and Gustave Doré, 1872. In the chapter relating to the Derby, Jerrold describes this scene as an example of a type of 'over-muscular, thick-throated Englishman, who delights in every opportunity of showing his manly vigour'.
