The Derby - finish of the race
An illustration from the book 'London: a Pilgrimage' by Blanchard Jerrold and Gustave Doré, 1872. The scene shows the crowd in the stands at Epsom racecourse, watching as the horses cross the finish line of the Derby. Jerrold describes the cheering of the crowds as follows: 'Faster and shriller come the shouts. The Grand Stand is in convulsions. The bellowing is fearful to hear' until 'all tend to a final crash of ten thousand voices, and - the Derby is won'.
