A sketch on the Downs
An illustration showing people encamped on Epsom Downs on the day before the Derby, from the book 'London: a Pilgrimage' by Blanchard Jerrold and Gustave Doré,1872. Jerrold writes: 'Stroll through the enormous encampment that lights up the Downs on the eve of the Derby, and mark the strange hordes of men and women who are preparing to receive half London tomorrow'.
The Derby, named after Edward Smith Stanley, the 12th Earl of Derby, has been run at Epsom Downs Racecourse since 1780.
