Hansom cab
Illustration of a Hansom cab from 'London: a Pilgrimage' by Blanchard Jerrold and Gustave Doré, 1872. Hackney carriages had plied for trade in London since the early seventeenth century. By the early nineteenth century cabriolets, or cabs, were introduced and in 1834 Joseph Aloysius Hansom registered his 'patent safety cab'. The Hansom cab had a square body, that was low to the ground, and large wheels, the low centre of gravity making it safer when turning corners.
