Advertising boardman
An illustrated capital letter 'A' in the form of a sandwich board man, from Chapter XIV of 'London: a Pilgrimage' by Blanchard Jerrold and Gustave Doré, 1872. Jerrold writes that "He who falls from honest, methodical, skilled labour, and the regular travel by the workman's train, must earn his shilling or eighteenpence a day as a boardman or dock labourer; or he must withdraw to the workhouse, or starve..".
