Playbill
Playbill announcing a programme of entertainment at Astley's Royal Amphitheatre, April 20th 1834. Including performance of Wars of Wellington, Mr Durow and the Masked Ball.
Ducrow was the proprieter of Astley's, where he had learned horsemanship from his father. Ducrow devised spectacular equestrian acts, which were inventive and influential and some continue to be peformed. Astley's was south of the Thames, and had established a reputation for its spectacular equestrian melodramas. Andrew Ducrow ran Astley's until it was destroyed by fire for the third time in 1841. After the fire in 1841 William Batty acquired Astley's from Ducrow. Ducrow died early in 1842 after suffering a mental breakdown.
