Atlas Works
Lithographed billhead with handwritten invoice issued by the machine making firm Henry Clayton and company, located at Atlas Works, 21 Upper Park Place, Dorset Square, London. The billhead includes a lithograph by Day & Son of the Atlas Works factory from where the firm manufactured a range of machines and equipment used in the building trade including mills, tile and pipe machines brick moulds and drawing instruments. The billhead also notes that the firm was patronised by Prince Albert, husband of Queen Victoria. The handwritten invoice refers to the supply of a pugging mill used for grinding materials with the addition of a liquid.
The lithographic firm of Day and son was established by William Day in 1823 and soon became one of the most prominent and largest lithographic printing firms in the UK. On the death of William in 1845 the business transferred to his son, also William, and became known as Day & Son. The firm was patronised by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert and won a medal at the Great Exhibition in 1851.
