An act for preventing and suppressing of fires within the City of London, and liberties thereof
This Act of Common Council was printed in 1668 and lists the regulations introduced to prevent fires in the City of London and the area just outside the City walls. The City was split into four sections. Each was to have 800 leather buckets, 50 ladders, 24 pickaxes and 40 shovels as fire-fighting equipment. There was to be two brass squirts supplied to every parish and each of the 12 major City companies was to have a fire engine.
Among the many rules were the following: a bell man and members of the Watch were to patrol the streets at night to check for fires. If the cry of fire sounded at night, citizens were to put a light and bucket of water at their door to help the fire fighters. People were banned from storing ashes under the stairs and twice a year a constable would inspect fireplaces and ovens to check their safety.
