Printed Ephemera — 1860-1880
Faithful till Death
Handfinished Valentine's card comprising two layers of white lace paper with elaborate embossing. The top layer incorporates a design including foliage, shells and angels on clouds surrounding three open panels. The embossed decoration on the undersheet includes two gazebo style buildings which show through the side panels on the top sheet. The two layers are held together by folded paper springs or hinges which give the card a 3d effect. In the centre of the plain inner sheet are applied two embossed white paper gazebos, identical to those on the sheet above. When the card is closed these can be seen through the open central area of the card. Also applied to the inner sheet a paper scrap printed 'Faithful till death'. Applied to the top sheet is an embossed paper garland of leaves and flowers.
