Social History — 1994
Badge, lapel badge
In 1994 anti-road activists staged a protest against the Department of Transport's plans to build a bypass from Batheaston to Swainswick in Somerset. The road would pass through the ancient beauty spot of Solsbury Hill. Anti-road protests were common in the 1990s as the new environmentalist movement gathered steam. The campaign to protect Solsbury Hill failed, but provided momentum for others, including the protests against the Newbury bypass.
