Printed Ephemera — 1860-1880
Card, valentine card
Side opening sample Valentine's card comprising a sheet of white lace paper embossed with flower design including four roundels of embossed flowers flanking a central oval panel. Applied to the panel is an additional oval panel decorated with two paper cut out frogs facing each other surrounded by dried grasses and paper flowers. Below the frogs is handwritten 'If a body meet a body Coming through the Rye, If a body kiss a body Need a body cry?'. Inside the card is applied a piece of tracing paper with an ink sketch of the above applied decoration. Beside is handwritten 'Mr Sears' (or Gears) 'working pattern'. This card is interesting in that it reveals the process of the design and decoration of the card.
