Printed Ephemera — 1850-1865
Card, valentine card
Side opening valentine's card composed of two layers of embossed and lace paper with applied decoration. The under layer is stamped 'Windsor' and comprises a central oval shaped panel surrounded by an embossed and lace paper design of columns, urns and a reclining figure. Applied to the central area is a wreath of cream fabric leaves framing a small paper wreath of embossed flowers and leaves which borders a panel of cream satin with an applied miniature paper envelope. When opened the envelope reveals the handwritten message 'When shall I buy the ring'. The top layer of lace paper is painted silver and is embossed with a scene of couples sitting within a woodland lace paper setting. Flanking each side of the central decoration is a cut out paper illustration of a flower garland. The two layers of lace paper are attached by paper springs which give a 3d effect.
