Printed Ephemera — 1851-1870
Card, valentine card
Side opening valentine's card formed from layers of lace paper giving a 3d effect. The bottom layer has a white lace paper border embossed with flower garlands and a central panel of rice paper handpainted with a lakeside scene. The other three layers of embossed and lace paper form a frame around this central image. The layers are painted silver and heavily embossed with foliage, pillars, figures, urns, fountains and a boat containing two figures of cupid. Each layer is attached to the one beneath by folded paper springs to form a 3d effect. As the layers overlap it is difficult to distinguish one from the other. The top sheet is stamped 'Windsor'.
