The Fire of London, AD 1666

This is a modern re-print of a newspaper printed shortly after the Great Fire of London, by Thomas Newcomb in the Savoy. It contains an account of the fire, the fate of the homeless Londoners, an assessment of the international situation and a column of advertisements showing the new residences of certain people and services after the fire.

The advertisements show that the Excise Office has moved to Southampton Fields, Alderman Backwell is lodging at Gresham College, where he is carrying on his business (this was Lombard Street until the fire), the Customs House is operating from Mr Bland's house on Mark Lane and the General Letter Office (Post Office) is now in Bishopsgate Street (having moved from Cloak Lane). Newspapers like this must have been vital for the continuation of business.
