Accept this Simple tribute of affection

Valentine's card of embossed and lace paper with applied decoration. Comprising a silver lace paper border embossed with vines and leaves The central white panel also embossed with garlands of silver flowers. Applied to the centre a bone panel handpainted with a bunch of flowers bordered by a frame of cream fabric leaves. Also applied a small paper scrap printed 'Accept this simple tribute of affection'.

The introduction of the penny post in 1840 meant sending cards became easier and cheaper. A thriving business developed in central London producing cards and card components. This card was originally in the collection of Jonathan King, a stationer and newsagent who ran his own business making cards on Essex Road.
