Printed Ephemera — 1845-1880
Card, valentine card
Valentine's card of embossed and lace paper layers with applied decoration. The underlayer is of white lace paper by Kershaw & Son elaborately embossed with a ship manned by cherubs and an underwater scene with fish, mermaids and shells. This layer has been covered by the top layer of silver lace paper decorated with flowers and four rosettes each having a length of central pink thread. As the thread is pulled the lace paper rossettes unravel from the centre to reveal a printed paper illustration of cupid applied to the layer below. In the central panel is applied a sheet of light blue paper decorated with an embossed lace paper fountain painted silver and a garland of coloured paper flowers and leaves.
