Printed Ephemera — 1845-1880
Card, valentine card
Valentine's card of embossed lace paper with applied decoration. With an outer border of gilded lace paper with flower decoration. The central panel is of cream watered silk. In the centre is applied a small coloured paper 'scrap' of a cherub on a cloud surrounded by an embossed border of red roses and green leaves. It is also decorated with a garland of silver & white embossed paper leaves.
Victorian Valentine's cards like this could be made from commercially-produced papers. Paper lace was a popular card base and printed scraps would be added to adorn and personalise the cards.
